AstraZeneca joins the TrumpRx.gov initiative after Pfizer

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca on Friday announced that it would join the Trump administration’s TrumpRx.gov initiative. The company became the second after Pfizer to agree to sell medicines directly to patients via a government-run online marketplace at significant discounts. The initiative is positioned as a new direct-to-patient model that cuts out traditional middlemen in the supply chain.

What the platform promises and how direct sales would work

The core idea of TrumpRx.gov is that patients will be able to purchase prescription drugs directly from manufacturers at lower prices. In effect, the platform becomes a kind of storefront where pharmaceutical companies post their offers and the buyer places an order without the usual pharmacy markups.

AstraZeneca spelled out the terms of its participation: the company intends to sell medicines to “eligible patients” with a valid prescription for chronic conditions at discounts of up to 80% off the list price.

The announced discount levels vary by manufacturer:

• AstraZeneca says it will offer up to 80% off list prices for chronic-disease medications.

• Pfizer cites a range of 50% to 85% off the “sticker” price and plans to bring a broad range of primary-care medications to the platform.

At the same time, neither company has yet disclosed the exact lists of medicines or the final terms for each item.

Buying medicines under such a scheme, and online at that, is still relatively new, but experience shows that people tend to adapt quickly to anything that can be done via the internet, because it is genuinely convenient. How it started: Pfizer and the White House

The project first became known on September 30, when Pfizer, together with Trump, announced it would take part in the initiative. At that time, the site did not yet exist, and media reports cited the address TrumpRx.com. Later, the site appeared on a government domain, and on Friday AstraZeneca announced it was joining.

Tariff relief draws pharma giants

Participation in TrumpRx.gov has a tangible economic rationale. The deal with Pfizer was accompanied by a three-year exemption for the company from broad tariffs on imported medicines. AstraZeneca became the second company to take advantage of this relief. In return, both sides committed to scaling up manufacturing in the United States. In a speech at the White House, Trump urged other companies to follow Pfizer’s lead.

As part of the agreement, Pfizer stated its intention to invest an additional $70 billion in research and development in the United States. This amount is directly tied to the agreement to list products on TrumpRx.

AstraZeneca’s US plants and labs

AstraZeneca, for its part, is backing up its participation with a whole series of manufacturing projects:

• Last week, construction began on a new plant in Virginia focused on producing weight-management and metabolic-disease medicines.

• Next week, the official opening of an expanded facility in Coppell, Texas, will take place.

• Early next year, cell-therapy manufacturing is scheduled to launch in Rockville, Maryland.

• By the end of 2026, the company will open a second major R&D center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The government as an intermediary between patients and manufacturers

The administration confirmed that the platform is operated by the federal government; however, the purchases themselves will be made directly from pharmaceutical companies. TrumpRx.gov will serve as an intermediary and a storefront for placing orders, without acting as the seller of the medicines.
